Clinical Signs
Outbreaks of equine influenza spread quickly. When
unprotected horses are exposed to the equine influenza virus, they
generally will develop clinical signs of disease within 1 to 5 days.
Clinical signs may include:
- A Rapid Rise in Temperature
(possibly as high as 105° F)
- Loss of Appetite
- Muscle Soreness
- Depression
- Nasal Discharge (thin and watery at first changing
to a thick discharge after several days)
- Dry Cough
The clinical signs of equine influenza are similar
to other respiratory diseases, such as equine rhinopneumonitis and
viral arteritis. The best way to confirm equine influenza is with
laboratory testing.
